Stress, Sleep and Your Smile: Looking After Yourself This Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, full of family, festivities, and food. But for many people, it can also bring a little extra stress. From last-minute shopping to hosting duties and end-of-year deadlines, the pressure can take its toll not just on your wellbeing, but on your oral health too.

At Hermitage Dental Practice, we often see the effects of festive stress on our patients’ smiles. Here’s how stress and lack of sleep can impact your teeth and gums, and what you can do to protect them this Christmas.

How Stress Affects Your Oral Health

When you’re feeling stressed, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone that can weaken your immune system and make your gums more vulnerable to inflammation and infection. But that’s not the only way stress affects your mouth.

1. Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching

Many people subconsciously grind or clench their teeth when they’re anxious or under pressure, especially at night. This condition, known as bruxism, can lead to:

  • Worn or flattened tooth surfaces

  • Jaw pain or headaches

  • Sensitivity and even cracked teeth

Tip: If you’ve noticed morning headaches, jaw tension, or sore teeth, speak to us. We can assess for signs of grinding and, if needed, fit a custom night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep.

2. Neglecting Your Oral Hygiene Routine

When life gets busy, it’s easy to skip brushing or flossing. Unfortunately, this gives plaque bacteria the perfect opportunity to build up, which can lead to bleeding gums or bad breath.

Tip: Keep a travel toothbrush in your bag or car for those nights when you get home late. A quick brush before bed can make all the difference.

3. Stress-Related Ulcers and Dry Mouth

Stress and tiredness can sometimes trigger mouth ulcers or reduce saliva production, leading to a dry mouth. Without enough saliva, your teeth and gums are more prone to decay.

Tip: Stay hydrated, avoid overly spicy or acidic foods while ulcers heal, and use a fluoride mouthwash to keep your mouth clean and comfortable.

Why Sleep Matters for a Healthy Smile

Sleep is vital for your body’s repair and recovery — including your gums and soft tissues. A lack of rest can reduce saliva flow and lower your resistance to gum infections.

Tip: Aim for 7–8 hours of good-quality sleep each night. If stress is keeping you awake, try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, gentle stretching, or reading before bed instead of scrolling on your phone.

Protecting Your Smile Through the Festive Rush

A few simple habits can make a big difference over Christmas:

  • Brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and an electric toothbrush.

  • Floss or use interdental brushes daily.

  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals.

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Take a few moments each day to unwind — your mouth (and mind) will thank you for it.
