Don’t Let Your Smile Wear Thin: How to Prevent Enamel Erosion

At Hermitage Dental Practice, we know your smile is one of your most valuable assets. That’s why protecting your tooth enamel – the hard, outer layer of your teeth – is so important. While enamel is incredibly strong, it isn’t indestructible. Over time, it can wear away, leading to tooth sensitivity, discolouration, and a higher risk of decay.

Let’s take a closer look at what causes enamel erosion and how you can keep your smile strong and healthy.

What Is Enamel Erosion?

Enamel erosion refers to the gradual loss of tooth enamel caused by acid. Unlike other parts of your body, enamel doesn’t grow back once it’s lost – so prevention is key.

As enamel wears away, you may begin to notice:

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods

  • A yellowish tint to your teeth

  • Increased vulnerability to cavities and chipping

What Causes Enamel Erosion?

Several everyday habits and health conditions can contribute to enamel wear:

  • Acidic foods and drinks – including citrus fruits, fruit juices, fizzy drinks, wine, and vinegar-based dressings

  • Brushing too hard or too soon – brushing straight after eating can damage softened enamel

  • Dry mouth – saliva helps to neutralise acid and protect teeth; a lack of it can speed up erosion

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism) – especially at night, can physically wear down enamel

  • Acid reflux and certain medications – can introduce stomach acids into the mouth

Top Tips to Prevent Enamel Erosion

Watch Your Diet Limit your intake of acidic foods and drinks. If you do enjoy them, try to consume them at mealtimes and rinse your mouth with water afterwards. Use a straw when drinking acidic beverages to reduce contact with your teeth.

Brush Smart Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride-based toothpaste, and brush gently to avoid enamel damage. Always brush before breakfast!

Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water helps to rinse away acids and maintain a healthy flow of saliva – your mouth’s natural defence.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum Chewing sugar-free gum after meals encourages saliva production, which helps to neutralise acids and protect your enamel.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly Routine check-ups allow us to spot early signs of enamel wear and provide tailored advice to protect your oral health.
