Maintaining healthy teeth and gums begins with effective daily care, but professional dental hygiene appointments play an essential role in keeping your mouth in the best possible condition. At Hermitage Dental Practice, our hygiene team works closely with our dentists to help prevent dental problems before they develop and support long-term oral health.

Regular hygiene visits allow us to remove plaque and hardened tartar that can build up in areas that are difficult to clean at home. Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, these deposits can accumulate over time and contribute to gum disease, tooth decay and staining. Professional hygiene care helps keep your teeth clean, your gums healthy and your smile looking its best.

What Happens During a Hygiene Appointment

During your hygiene visit, our hygienist/therapist will carefully examine the health of your gums and assess any areas where plaque or tartar has built up. Specialised instruments and ultrasonic technology are used to gently remove hardened deposits from around and between the teeth.

Your teeth will then be thoroughly polished to remove surface stains and leave your smile feeling smooth and refreshed. This process not only improves the appearance of your teeth but also helps reduce the likelihood of plaque re-attaching quickly.

Our hygienist/therapist will also provide personalised advice to help you improve your home oral care routine, including guidance on brushing techniques, interdental cleaning and lifestyle habits that can support healthier teeth and gums.

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems and often develops without obvious symptoms in the early stages. Regular hygiene visits allow us to identify early signs of gum inflammation and treat them before the condition progresses.

By maintaining consistent hygiene appointments alongside routine dental health reviews, you can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease and help protect the long-term health of your teeth and supporting structures.

Preventing Gum Disease.

Dental hygiene appointments are a key part of preventive dentistry. By removing plaque and tartar regularly and receiving tailored advice from our hygiene team, you can maintain healthier teeth and gums while reducing the likelihood of needing more complex dental treatment in the future.

Whether you attend for routine maintenance or require more focused periodontal care, our team is here to help you keep your smile clean, healthy and confident.

At Hermitage Dental Practice, we offer Air Polish treatment as an advanced addition to your hygiene appointment, helping to deliver a deeper and more effective clean. This technique uses a controlled stream of air, water and fine powder to gently remove plaque, surface stains and bacteria from the teeth.

Air Polish is particularly effective at reaching areas that are more difficult to clean with traditional methods, including between the teeth and around orthodontic appliances or dental restorations.

This treatment is highly effective at removing staining caused by everyday habits such as drinking coffee, tea or red wine, helping to restore the natural brightness of your smile while supporting overall gum health.

Air Polish is offered as an additional treatment alongside your hygiene appointment and carries a supplementary fee. Your hygienist will discuss whether this option is suitable for you and include it in your treatment plan where appropriate.
