How to Cope with Dental Anxiety: A Guide from Hermitage Dental Practice

Dental anxiety is incredibly common. In fact, millions of people in the UK delay or avoid dental appointments because of fear or past negative experiences. At Hermitage Dental Practice, we understand how overwhelming it can feel to even book a visit—so we want to share some practical ways to ease that anxiety and help you feel more confident in the dental chair.

You're Not Alone—And We’re Here to Help

First, know that dental anxiety is nothing to be embarrassed about. Whether your fear stems from a past experience, a fear of pain, or even the sounds and smells of a dental practice, we're trained to support you every step of the way.

Our Top Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety

1. Talk to Your Dentist About Your Fears

We encourage all patients to share their concerns openly. Let us know if you're nervous, and we’ll take extra care to explain each step, move at your pace, and ensure you're as comfortable as possible.

Tip: Book a complimentary consultation with one of our treatment co-ordinators just to talk—no treatment, no tools, just a conversation.

2. Bring a Friend or Loved One

Having someone you trust with you can help ease anxiety. Whether it’s a hand to hold or just moral support, we welcome companions for nervous patients.

3. Use Distraction Techniques

Headphones and music can block out sounds that trigger anxiety. At Hermitage Dental, we’re happy for you to listen to calming playlists or even a podcast during treatment.

4. Try Deep Breathing or Guided Relaxation

Controlled breathing helps calm your nervous system. Try breathing in slowly for 4 seconds, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4—before and during your visit.

Some patients also benefit from meditation apps like Calm or Headspace before appointments.

5. Ask About Numbing cream

If fear of pain is a concern, we offer gentle numbing techniques and can discuss sedation options if needed. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable throughout.

6. Book a Morning Appointment

Early visits reduce the time you have to worry beforehand and let you start the day feeling accomplished.

7. Start with Something Small

If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, that’s okay. We can begin with a simple hygiene appointment to rebuild your comfort and trust. We can also book treatments over multiple appointments to enable you to complete it at your pace.

Our Promise to You

At Hermitage Dental Practice, we create a calm, friendly, and judgment-free space. We never rush, never pressure, and always listen. If you're anxious about visiting the dentist, we're here to change that experience for the better—one gentle visit at a time.
