Should I come to the dentist if I have a cold sore?

If you’ve developed a cold sore before your dental appointment, you might be wondering whether it’s still okay to come in. At Hermitage Dental Practice, our top priority is the safety and comfort of our patients and staff — which is why we strongly recommend rescheduling your visit if you have an active cold sore. Here’s why:
1. Cold Sores Are Highly Contagious
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), which can be spread easily through direct contact or airborne droplets. Dental procedures often involve close contact with the mouth and can generate aerosols — increasing the risk of viral transmission to both dental staff and other patients.
2. Increased Risk of Secondary Infection
The skin around a cold sore is already compromised and vulnerable. Dental work may inadvertently aggravate the area, leading to delayed healing or even secondary bacterial infections.
3. Discomfort During Treatment
Dental procedures can be uncomfortable even on a good day — and if you have a cold sore, that discomfort can be significantly worse. The stretching, pressure, or suction involved in many treatments can cause pain or even rupture the sore.
4. Risk of Viral Spread
HSV-1 can spread to other areas of the face or body — including the eyes — especially when disturbed. This risk increases during dental procedures where irritation or contact with fluids is common.
What Should You Do If You Have a Cold Sore?
If you have an upcoming appointment at Hermitage Dental Practice and notice the early signs of a cold sore (tingling, itching, or the appearance of a blister), we recommend contacting us right away. Our team will be happy to reschedule your appointment or advise you on next steps.
Your health and safety are our priority — and that includes waiting until the time is right for treatment.
