Why We Recommend an Electric Toothbrush

At Hermitage Dental Practice, one of the most common questions we get from patients is: “Should I be using an electric toothbrush?” Our answer is usually yes and here’s why it’s a great choice for both adults and children.
1. They clean teeth more effectively
Electric toothbrushes remove more plaque than manual brushes — simple as that. Research, including a large review by the respected Cochrane organisation, shows they reduce plaque and gum inflammation better than manual brushing, even after just a few weeks of use. That means healthier teeth and gums for the whole family.
2. They’re easier to use
An electric toothbrush does most of the work for you. All you need to do is guide it around your mouth. This is especially helpful for:
Adults with limited hand movement (e.g. arthritis or joint problems)
Children still learning proper brushing technique
Anyone who tends to brush too hard or not for long enough
Most electric brushes now have a built-in timer, so you know you’re brushing for the full 2 minutes, and some have pressure sensors that warn you if you're brushing too hard.
3. They help protect gums and prevent future problems
Long-term studies have shown that people who use electric toothbrushes are less likely to lose teeth as they get older. That’s because these brushes are better at keeping your gums healthy and stopping gum disease before it starts.
For kids, a good electric toothbrush can help avoid plaque build-up and early signs of gum problems — setting them up for a lifetime of better oral health.
4. Kids love them
Brushing can be a chore for children — but electric toothbrushes can actually make it fun. Many have colourful designs, flashing lights, or even apps and games that encourage kids to brush properly and for the right amount of time.
We’ve seen time and time again that when kids enjoy brushing, they do it more often — and that makes a big difference.
5. Backed by UK research
A UK-based study published by the Oral Health Foundation found that adults using electric toothbrushes had healthier gums, less decay, and kept more of their natural teeth over time.
More than 60% of adults in the UK now use an electric brush — and that number keeps rising.
6. Good value in the long run
While electric toothbrushes cost more upfront than manual ones, they can actually save money over time by helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease — which means fewer dental treatments.
Some great models start at around £30–40, and brush heads can be changed every few months without needing to replace the whole unit.
