Red-Flag Dental Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

At Hermitage Dental Practice, we believe prevention is always better than cure. But sometimes, your mouth gives you a clear signal that something needs attention — fast. Whether it’s bleeding gums, ongoing toothache, or something that just doesn’t feel right, knowing the red-flag symptoms can help you take action before a minor issue becomes a major one.
Here are the key warning signs to watch out for — and why they matter.
1. Bleeding Gums
It might seem minor, especially if it only happens when brushing or flossing — but bleeding gums are not normal. This can be an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and even affect your general health.
Watch for:
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
Swollen, red, or tender gums
Receding gums or teeth looking “longer”
💡 Don’t wait until it’s painful — early gum disease is usually painless, but treatable.
2. Persistent Toothache or Sensitivity
Tooth pain is your body’s way of telling you that something’s wrong. Whether it's sharp, throbbing, or constant, don’t dismiss it — especially if it lingers.
Possible causes include:
Deep decay or cavities
An abscess or infection
A cracked or damaged tooth
Exposed tooth roots or enamel erosion
💡 Even sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods that doesn’t go away may signal a deeper problem.
3. Swelling in the Mouth or Jaw
Any swelling inside your mouth, face, or jaw should be taken seriously. It can be a sign of infection, abscess, trauma, or even — in rare cases — oral cancer.
Get urgent advice if you notice:
Swelling that worsens or spreads
Pain when opening your mouth
A fever or feeling unwell
💡 A dental abscess can become a serious health issue if not treated promptly.
4. Loose Adult Teeth
Adult teeth should never feel wobbly or mobile. If they do, it could be a sign of advanced gum disease or bone loss.
Also concerning:
A sudden change in how your teeth fit together
Gaps appearing where none existed
Teeth shifting position or “flaring out”
💡 Early intervention can sometimes save loose teeth with the right treatment plan.
5. Mouth Sores That Don’t Heal
Mouth ulcers are common and usually harmless. But if you have a sore or patch that lasts more than two weeks, it should be checked by a dentist.
Look out for:
Persistent ulcers or lumps
White or red patches in the mouth
Numbness, difficulty swallowing, or voice changes
💡 These can be early signs of oral cancer. Catching it early can be lifesaving.
